The Impossible
Synopsis
In 2004, Dr. Maria Bennett, her husband Henry, and their three sons, Lucas, Thomas, and Simon, travel to Khao Lak, Thailand, for a Christmas vacation. They settle into a beautiful beachside resort and enjoy their time together. However, their holiday turns into a nightmare when a massive tsunami strikes the coast on the morning of December 26, devastating everything in its path.
cThe family is separated by the powerful waves. Maria and Lucas manage to stay together, but Maria is severely injured, suffering deep wounds on her leg and chest. Struggling to survive, they come across a stranded toddler named Daniel, whom Maria insists on helping despite Lucas’s frustration. Eventually, they are found by locals who take them to a nearby hospital in Takua Pa. Lucas stays by Maria’s side, but she requires urgent surgery for internal bleeding. Meanwhile, due to a mix-up at the overcrowded hospital, Lucas briefly believes his mother has died before they are reunited.
Henry, Thomas, and Simon also survive, but Henry, determined to find Maria and Lucas, sends the boys to safety in the mountains while he searches the wreckage. He meets Karl, a fellow survivor searching for his own family, and together they scour the hospitals. After a series of close encounters, the family is finally reunited outside the hospital in an emotional moment. Maria, still in critical condition, is airlifted to Singapore for further medical treatment. As they board the evacuation plane, Lucas reassures his mother that Daniel has been reunited with his father. Looking down at the devastation below, Maria is overwhelmed with emotion, grateful that her family has survived despite the unimaginable tragedy.
