Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story
"FAITH, DETERMINATION, AND HARD WORK CAN HELP PEOPLE OVERCOME OBSTACLES AND ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS."
Synopsis
Dr. Ben Carson, a talented neurosurgeon, travels to Ulm, Germany, in 1987 to attempt the highly complex separation of conjoined twins, Patrick and Benjamin Binder. As he prepares for the surgery, the film flashes back to his childhood in 1961 Detroit, where he struggles academically. His mother, Sonya, despite having only a third-grade education, pushes him and his brother Curtis to excel by limiting their TV time and requiring them to read books and write reports. Unbeknownst to them, she is illiterate and cannot read their reports.
Ben’s love for learning grows, and he rises from the bottom of his class to the top. However, he struggles with an uncontrollable temper, nearly stabbing a classmate in a fit of rage. Overwhelmed, he turns to his faith, praying for help to control his anger. Determined to succeed, Ben earns a scholarship to Yale University, where he meets his future wife, Candy. After medical school, he joins Johns Hopkins as a neurosurgery resident and faces a life-changing decision when he performs an unauthorized but life-saving operation on a dying patient.
As his career flourishes, Ben successfully performs a rare hemispherectomy on a young girl suffering from uncontrollable seizures, gaining widespread recognition. Meanwhile, he and Candy endure personal heartbreak when she miscarries their twins.
Returning to 1987, Ben and his team finally develop a groundbreaking strategy for separating the Binder twins. After an intense 22-hour surgery, the operation succeeds, marking a milestone in medical history. The film ends with Dr. Carson being surrounded by the press, celebrated for his remarkable achievement.
