The Blind Side
"COMPASSION AND KINDNESS CAN SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGE A PERSON'S LIFE BY PROVIDING SUPPORT, OPPORTUNITIES, AND A SENSE OF BELONGING, EVEN WHEN THEY COME FROM A CHALLENGING BACKGROUND."
Synopsis
The Blind Side is based on the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless African-American teenager with a troubled past, who is taken in by the Tuohy family. Seventeen-year-old Michael has been in and out of foster care due to his mother's drug addiction. He gets enrolled in Wingate Christian School with the help of Coach Burt Cotton, who is impressed by his size and athleticism despite his poor academic record.
At his new school, Michael befriends a boy named Sean Jr. "SJ" Tuohy. SJ's mother, Leigh Anne Tuohy, is a strong-minded interior designer and wife of wealthy businessman Sean Tuohy. She notices Michael walking alone in the cold and offers him a place to stay. Over time, Michael becomes a member of the Tuohy family, despite concerns from Leigh Anne's rich friends about his presence.
Leigh Anne learns about Michael's difficult past and discovers his aptitude for protecting others. With improved grades and the support of his new family, Michael joins the school's football team. He initially struggles but eventually excels after Leigh Anne encourages him to use his protective instincts. SJ sends out videos of Michael's games to college coaches, and Michael's academic performance improves with the help of a tutor, Miss Sue.
Michael receives numerous college scholarship offers, but commits to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), the alma mater of the Tuohy family. This decision prompts an NCAA investigation into whether the Tuohys had a vested interest in Michael's choice. Michael confronts Leigh Anne but ultimately explains to the investigator that he chose Ole Miss because it felt like home.
The film concludes with Michael's emotional departure for college, his selection by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 NFL Draft, and real-life photographs of Michael Oher and the Tuohy family.
